We roast our kopi beans every Wednesday. The Ipoh Old Town shop is closed on Tuesdays.

Atap Zink Kopitiam

A family kopitiam in Ipoh, since 1968

Mornings start under the zinc roof.

We roast our own beans every Wednesday and brew them through a cloth sock, the way Ah Kong did. The bread is toasted over charcoal, the kaya is cooked fresh every morning and the nasi lemak is wrapped before 7am.

Our story

Three generations, one charcoal stove

Ah Kong opened this shop in 1968 in a zinc-roofed shophouse in Ipoh's old town. Back then there were six marble tables, one charcoal stove and a cat that liked to sleep on the counter.

Today his grandchildren pull the teh, but the method hasn't changed: we roast our own beans, stir the kaya slowly every morning and still toast the bread over charcoal. The Greentown shop opened in 2016 for regulars who could never get a seat at the old one.

Reviews

What the regulars say

Sample reviews for this demo. A live site shows real customer reviews.

  • I've been drinking kopi here since secondary school. It still tastes the same, thick and fragrant. Their charcoal toast is something else.

    Rahman A.Regular since the 1980s
  • We booked catering for 120 at an office event. The nasi lemak arrived on time with spoons and napkins. Everyone asked which shop it was from.

    Mei Ling T.Office event catering
  • Came on a Sunday at 8am and waited 10 minutes for a table, but worth it. Their half-boiled eggs are actually half-boiled, not hard.

WhatsApp us about catering
Is the food halal?

Our kitchen is pork-free and lard-free, and we don't serve alcohol. We are not halal-certified, so we don't display a halal logo. (Sample wording for this demo: a live site states the premises' actual status.)

Do you cater? What's the minimum?

Yes, from 20 to 300 people: nasi lemak bungkus, mee goreng in trays, kaya toast, and kopi and teh in urns. Book at least 3 days ahead on WhatsApp. Delivery within Ipoh is free for 50 people or more.

Is there parking?

At the old town shop there is only paid street parking, which usually fills up after 8am on weekends. Greentown has bays in front of the shop and behind the block.

Can we book a table for a group?

For 8 or more at Greentown, WhatsApp us a day ahead and we'll hold a table upstairs. The old town shop doesn't take bookings: first come, first served.

Can I order takeaway on WhatsApp?

Yes. Send your order and pickup time and we'll have it ready at the counter. The morning nasi lemak usually runs out before 11am, so order early.
