An interior design and build studio founded in 2016, working from a shophouse in Bangsar on homes, cafes, shops and offices across Malaysia.

Founded 2016, Bangsar
Ruang started with two children's bedrooms in Subang Jaya and a simple idea: most rooms do not need more things, they need more thought.
Ten years on we are a team of designers, a visualiser and our own build crew. We still begin every project the same way, by spending time in the space and listening to the people who use it.
We prefer materials that age well in Malaysian heat and humidity: solid oak, terrazzo, rattan, linen and limewash. They cost a little more at the start and a lot less over twenty years.

Listen first
The brief is the most important drawing. We do not sketch until we understand how the space is used.

2016
Two rooms in Subang Jaya
Nadia Rahman founds Ruang from her dining table. The first commission is two children's bedrooms.

2018
The Bangsar shophouse
We move into a first-floor shophouse studio in Bangsar and complete our first office project in Kuching.

2019
Our own build team
Arjun Pillai joins to set up an in-house build team, so we can design and build under one contract.

2021
3D visualisation studio
Tan Mei Ling joins and every client now sees their space in 3D before a single wall comes down.

2023
Cafes and retail
Daniel Lim joins as design director and our commercial work grows to a third of the studio's projects.
